Tuesday, January 18, 2011 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM Aboriginal and Western Science: Braiding Knowledge to Inform Resource Use and Conservation
Where: First Nations House of Learning, 1985 West Mall, UBC UBC Point Grey Campus
Description: Green College Interdisciplinary Colloquium Aboriginal and Western Science: Braiding Knowledge to Inform Resource Use and Conservation Hosted by Thomas D. Sisk, Center for Sustainable Environments, Northern Arizona University; Cecil H. and Ida Green Visiting Professor, UBC Anne Salomon, Assistant Professor and Hakai Professor, Simon Fraser University Ron Trosper, Faculty of Forestry, UBC Jennifer Carpenter, Culture and Heritage Manager, Heiltsuk Integrated Resource Management Department This event will explore how different views can be articulated, appreciated, and combined in respectful ways to support shared values and guide actions that advance biocultural conservation. This Colloquium brings together aboriginal representatives and academic scientists to discuss different ways of knowing, and what can be gained by respectful “braiding” of different traditions that can inform human land tenure, resource use, and conservation. The main session and evening fireside chat to follow, will involve six invited speakers in an exploration of the perceived differences and similarities in aboriginal and western approaches to understanding nature, as well as emerging convergence of the insights they offer. Each of the invited guests will speak about how their experiences of science and traditional knowledge have influenced their understanding of the world and their approach to environmental management and conservation. See the Fireside Chat event page. This academic event hosted by Green College is open to the University community and general public without charge. For more information, contact gc.events@ubc.ca or visit www.greencollege.ubc.ca Those interested in attending dinner at Green College after the event are asked to purchase a dinner ticket at least by noon the business day before. ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— This coming Tuesday January 18th is the kick-off of UBC’s Green Drinks Chapter. If you are not familiar with Green Drinks– http://www.greendrinks.org/ Details of the UBC Chapter Where: Mahony’s When: Every third Tuesday, 5:45 pm -until the conversation ends What: Green Drinks is an informal networking opportunity for people who are interested in sustainability and are looking to learn more about the field and sharing knowledge. It’s a great way of catching up with people you know and also for making new contacts. Everyone invites someone else along, so there’s always a different crowd, making Green Drinks an organic, self-organising network. These events are very simple and unstructured, but many people have found employment, made friends, developed new ideas, done deals and had moments of serendipity. I hope to see many GRSers there! -Amy
