Why did you choose the GRS specialization that you did?
Studying development and sustainable food systems has been my way of combining all of my varying interests into one – from political science, food security, sociology, economics, and nutrition!
What did you learn from your international experiences?
Due to COVID-19, I was unable to take part in my international experience, but I was able to find an enriching work experience to fill my summer. I worked as the Food Hub Community Liaison at the South Vancouver Neighbourhood House. This was a fantastic experience for me as it offered real world experience to my interests in development and sustainable food systems. Our Food Hub operates on a ‘Hub and Spoke’ model, and I assisted my boss in building relationships, conducting needs assessments, and coordinating logistics with our partner ‘Spoke’ organizations. I also assisted with community engagement and outreach to our participants. I loved this role because I was able to try on so many different hats from engaging seniors, writing grants, and leading meetings!
What do you like best about the GRS program?
I am so grateful that the GRS program surrounds me with a community of learners that are passionate about systemic societal change. I love the flexibility the program offers, and the support and encouragement I get from my fellow students to follow my passion.
