Duration: Full-time Years Experience: 5-7 Application Deadline: October 23, 2009 The British Columbia Council for International Cooperation (BCCIC) is a coalition of international development organizations that work toward sustainable global development. The council is committed to international cooperation in two ways: First, BCCIC is a membership-based organization and supports its members with networking opportunities, information sharing, training, and represents their interests in dealing with government. Secondly, the council seeks to promote and mobilize British Columbians as active global citizens. Nature and Scope of Position: The Program Officer is responsible for facilitating and implementing membership services that include capacity building workshops, opportunities for networking, and a public engagement program. This is a full time contract position for one year with a potential for extension. This includes:
  1. The organization of capacity building workshops for members in Prince George, Kamloops, Kelowna, the Comox Valley and Victoria.
  2. The facilitation of strategic working groups around the millennium development goals.
  3. The implementation of the public engagement program. This program aims to raise awareness, knowledge, and action by citizens to make the connections between global and local poverty issues. The strategy utilizes popular educations tools like forum theatre and public deliberations.
  4. The organization of International Development Week events in early February 2010.
The applicant must be capable of working independently and in a team context, and be able to work flexible hours including considerable travel within BC. The ideal candidate will be based in Vancouver, but have spent a substantial amount of time in one or more of the communities that BCCIC is focusing on, or in similar environments.  The Program Officer reports to the Executive Director. Responsibilities:
  • To support members with their organizational development in creative, flexible and innovative ways.
  • To implement public engagement activities in collaboration with partners in selected communities.
  • To facilitate networking amongst members and beyond to the larger community.
  • To plan events and networking opportunities.
  • To evaluate programs and to report within the framework of BCCIC’s strategic plan and annual plans.
Qualifications:
  • Relevant post-secondary education plus a minimum of 5 years experience in a community development context
  • Significant experience with program development, including partnership development
  • Excellent understanding of popular education and public engagement
  • Excellent organization and planning skills, including event planning
  • Excellent and demonstrated public speaking skills
  • Sound knowledge of development issues
  • Demonstrated communications and relationship building skills
  • Grant writing and fund raising experience
  • Familiarity with the NGO community in BC
  • Experience in working with media
  • Experience working with CIDA and RBM an asset
  • International and intercultural experience an asset
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
Salary range for this position is $40,500 to $44,000 along with a benefits package.
