International Student Volunteer in Costa Rica
Name: Bryanna Thiel
Resource and Region Specialization: Urban Food Security & Europe
International Experience: Berlin, Germany & Europe; individually organized; May – September 2007. Last summer I fulfilled a lifelong dream; I moved to Berlin, Germany, for four months. This was a life changing experience. I packed up my bags and left for Europe all by myself. I had secured a wonderful place to live in former East Berlin with a German student via the internet. This required a lot of trust in people, but it worked out in the end. I then spent the summer visiting various cities and getting an international perspective on European lifestyles and cultures.
Costa Rica: International Student Volunteer; July-August 2006; 5 weeks
Traveling to Costa Rica for five weeks to work with a youth organization in a rural pineapple farming community to manually construct a basketball court for local residents was an empowering experience. I learned what teamwork can accomplish and how to work cooperatively in the face of language and cultural barriers. The trip, as all traveling usually does, opened up my eyes and my mind to a world I would never believe existed without experiencing it.
