Position: IPM Field Scouts (vegetable and berry crops)
Description: Integrated pest management scouts work in a team to collect pest (insect, mite, disease, weed) information that is used to help growers achieve more effective pest control. Positions involve working outdoors in all weather in co-operation with a team of other students and supervisors. The position involves extensive driving throughout the Fraser Valley.
Experience and skills gained: Field scouts gain experience in insect, mite, weed and disease identification. Field work, time management, collecting and organizing data are additional skills that are developed. Students gain a well balanced view of both local and global agricultural issues. Former scouts have gone on to summer/permanent jobs at Agriculture Canada, Ministry of Agriculture, and other agri-businesses.
Qualifications: This position is suitable to students who possess a mature work ethic, are interested in agriculture or related disciplines, in good physical health, and interested in working outdoors. Access to a reliable motor vehicle and valid BC (or equivalent) drivers license. References will be requested.
Responsibilities:
Monitor vegetable and/or berry crops for insects and diseases
Complete field data sheets
Inform supervisors of any problems or irregularities in the fields being monitored
Organize and file field data
Assist on research projects (as available)
Other duties as required
Length of Employment: May 9 or May 24 until September 2, 2011
Salary: This position is paid hourly at $12.00/hr in bi-weekly pay periods. The work week is 32-40 hours. Mileage is paid at $.40 /Km for use of personal vehicle from job site to job site. Vacation pay (4%) is paid out with each pay cheque.
Location: Delta, Cloverdale, Richmond, Langley, Abbotsford, Pitt Meadows.

At present, the bulk of the 6000+ acres of crops we monitor is made up of potato, cranberry, and blueberry.
