- If you are interested in your food system and have a little time to spare, the Food Secure Vancouver Study team needs your help!
- We are looking for people to collect information for a number of measurable indicators, and have the following opportunities for hands on involvement:
- Short Research Projects
- We have short-term opportunities to collect information on these topics:
- 1. # / location of farm gate sales in region
- 2. % provincial government spending on MAL by farm gate sales
- 3. Amount / % off-farm wages subsidizing farm work
- 4. Total sales of locally-harvested wild fish in local markets
- 5. # / location neighbourhood food and urban agriculture assets
- 6. Area of city land in food production
- 7. Proportion of edible plant species (trees, bushes, other plants) on City-owned/ leased land
- 8. Food waste: redistributed; composted (backyard, neighbourhood, commercial)
- 9. Essential services with emergency plans that include food provision
- 10. Cost of selected food items.
- Concept-to-Indicator Development
- We are also engaged in a process to explore and develop key concepts into useful indicators, and welcome your participation. Stay tuned for upcoming opportunities for dialogue and discussion:
- • Institutional food purchasing (# institutions w/ LPP, amount food purchased locally)
- • Cross-cultural experience of food security/ food system
- • Multi-sourced data: database; collection standards; collaboration (guidelines, safety, control)
- • Impact on food resilience of social capital/ interconnectivity
- • Impact of shocks to farmland and links to resiliency (i.e. flooding)
- • Agricultural water supply needs
- • Nutritional adequacy and acceptability of charitable meals.
