Environmental Student $20.07/ hour (CUPE 2009 rate) including 6% pay in lieu of vacation This position starts in April/May 2010 ; Consideration for a later start will be given to Education Students doing their practicum. North Cowichan (population 27,000), is a growing municipality located in the beautiful Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, between Nanaimo and Victoria. Our communities of Chemainus, Crofton and Maple Bay are home to a multitude of artistic, cultural and outdoor recreational activities. The successful candidate will create and deliver a public education environmental program. The first two months include presenting a one hour program to 50 or more elementary school classrooms. The content of these presentations will include topics on climate change, recycling, composting, and water conservation. The last two months involve researching and creating reports and delivering information on environmental issues to the general public. This position works 8 hours per day, Monday to Friday. In order to qualify for this competition, you must be a full-time student during the current academic year (i.e. 2008-2009), and intend to return to school full-time in the upcoming academic year. Required Skills, Qualifications, and Abilities 1. Excellent organizational and communication skills. 2. Experience teaching elementary school children. 3. Experience in public speaking. Knowledge of recycling, composting, water conservation, climate change and ground water protection. 4. Working knowledge of software programs (Microsoft Office). 5. Independence of judgment and capability of working with minimal supervision. 6. Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License; a satisfactory current driver’s profile will be required. 7. The position may be physically demanding; a medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.
