The GRS class tomorrow, Wednesday, march 10th will begin at 5:30 pm in the Telestudio (Rm# 0110, University Services Building – 2329 West Mall). The class will be in the form of a teleconference with members of a class at the University of Melbourne in Australia. Climate change will be the subject of the teleconference. Katina Tam, a member of our GRS class, will moderate the teleconference from the UBC side. The concept of the teleconference arose from Katina’s experience and contacts at a Universitas 21 (U21) Summer School held at the University of Queensland in Australia in the summer of 2009.
Professor Tony Weatherly, a soil scientist and lecturer in the Department of Resource Management and Geography at the University of Melbourne is the faculty member in Melbourne who has been working with us in the development and coordination of the teleconference. It is anticipated the teleconference will last until 7:00 pm. Katina consulted with Professor Weatherly and was able to move the time from the original time of 5:00 pm so that you will be able to attend the Wednesday night barbecue. We do ask that you arrive at the Telestudio on time as it may be disruptive to have people streaming in once the teleconference begins. Please be advised that food and drinks are not permitted in the Telestudio, otherwise we will be charged a clean up fee.
- A series of questions will be discussed tomorrow evening once general information about UBC and Vancouver and the University of Melbourne and Melbourne have been presented.
- What is the general consensus of the public on climate change?
- What action is currently being taken?
- What innovative approaches are being taken by your university
- Could U21 help to bring greater awareness of issues?
