Immigrant Vancouver Ethnographic Field School
Anth409/Soci400
UBC Department of Anthropology and Department of Sociology
May 10 – June 18, 2010
The UBC Department of Anthropology and Department of Sociology are launching the first Immigrant Vancouver Ethnographic Field School (IVEFS). As a fieldwork-based course, IVEFS will train students how to conduct in-depth, qualitative research (e.g. participant observation, interviews, focus groups, community profiles) related to the study of migration, transnationalism, global diasporas and multicultural communities. Community service learning is a core component of the summer field school. Students will spend several hours a week at a local Neighbourhood House that works directly with immigrant communities. Students’ final research projects will be shared with participating community organizations with the aim of building more vibrant and rewarding connections between students, the university and the wider public.
