UBC Farm is under threat and needs your help!
UBC is in the process of making a decision about the future of Vancouver’s last working farm – the UBC Farm (and Centre for Sustainable Food Systems.) The UBC Farm is a unique asset to the city and region. It provides students and the broader community the opportunity to learn hands-on how changes in the way food is produced and distributed are a key piece in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating climate change, and in creating healthy local communities and economies.
**Come join the Great Farm Trek 2009 in order to save the UBC Farm.**
The Alma Mater Society (your students’ union,) in collaboration with the UBC Friends of the Farm, is hosting UBC’s next Great Trek. The UBC campus started in 1922 after students organized the first Great Trek to convince the government to build UBC on the Point Grey campus. Now we get to hold the next trek to save such an important part of our campus. This trek will be a positive event focused on celebrating the UBC Farm and will be family friendly.
Starting at the SUB at 3:30 p.m., the march leaves just after 4 p.m. The march follows the route outlined in the link below, makes a brief stop off at the UBC Board of Governors meeting, and concludes at the UBC Farm just after 5:45pm. But the fun doesn’t end there — stick around for food, games, music, speakers, and a ceremonial planting. If you aren’t able to use public transit to get to UBC, we recommend you park your vehicle in South Campus near the UBC Farm as there will be shuttles taking people to the Trek starting location (or current location if you arrive after 4 p.m.)
Let’s send a message to UBC that we want the farm to stay!
