UNYA has an employment opportunity for an Assistant Coordinator with our Aboriginal Safehouse Program. The role of the Assistant Coordinator would be to assist with the administration of the residential Aboriginal Safe House program. To provide and maintain a safe, supportive environment in a residential setting, that is both culturally open and accessible in order to support the personal development of resident youth whose families are unavailable or unable to meet their needs. The Assistant Coordinator reports directly to the Aboriginal Safe House Coordinator, and the MCFD Contract Manager. Please note that this is a one year contract position.
Qualifications and Conditions:
1. B.A. or equivalent.
2. Minimum 3 years experience working youth, or a combination of relevant education & experience working with street-involved youth.
3. Previous experience working with Native youth.
4. Must have a broad based knowledge of the family and social issues that Native youth face today, including the generational impacts of the residential school system on Native families and communities, and a good understanding of Native cultures and traditions.
5. Must demonstrate a good working knowledge of community resources in Vancouver, particularly youth & Aboriginal-specific resources.
6. Will have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
7. Will have the ability to identify with mandate, policies and procedures of the organization.
8. Must possess a good working knowledge of computer systems and programs.
9. Must have strong written and oral communications skills, including the ability to compile accurate records and prepare reports.
10. Must have a personal support system and self care plan in place.
11. Must have a criminal record check completed by and satisfactory to UNYA.
12. Preference will be given to Aboriginal applicants.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Assist with the day-to-day management and coordination of the program, staff and office management. Scheduling of staff and monitoring and coordinating staff holidays, sick leave, and absences
2. Assist with the recruitment, hiring, supervising, and conducting performance evaluations of youth care workers and the 24 hour phone line worker.
3. Field any concerns, incidents or crises which affect program mandate, agency policy, personal issues, community relations, resident youth, etc; and when necessary refer to Program Coordinator.
4. Assist with maintaining appropriate monthly statistical and written client reports and records in order to meet UNYA and funding requirements.
5. Supervise the staff interventions and monitor case planning. Ensure that case plans as identified by residents and service professionals are implemented.
6. Attend and positively participate in meetings as required, including Senior Staff and FUNYA.
7. Perform on call duties, and respond to staff needs for immediate supervision when crises exist.
8. Assist with organizing, and attend and actively participate in monthly staff meetings.
9. Ensure that all staff criminal record checks, personal information, accounting information, and all other related information is submitted to the UNYA Executive Director in a timely manner.
10. Supervise the staff interventions and monitor case planning. Assess and coordinate staff training needs.
11. Actively assist the staff team in development and review of program components.
12. Attend professional development seminars to keep current regarding Street Youth issues (i.e. HIV / AIDS, alcohol and drug related issues, crime, gangs). Research and utilize community referral networks and make appropriate referrals.
13. Liaise and advocate for youth’s best interests with MCFD. Participate and provide advocacy representation in case planning and implementation.
14. Perform any other duty that the Coordinator of the Safe House deems necessary to ensure the safe, healthy, and productive operation of the Safe House.
