The Global Student Speakers’ Bureau
The Global Student Speakers’ Bureau: Opportunities to Speak About International Experiences to the UBC and Greater Vancouver Community
Who we are:
The Global Student Speakers’ Bureau is a UBC community of students, staff, and faculty that, through the “Internationalization at Home” project, develops and coordinates a roster of student speakers who are eager to share their international experiences with audiences from the UBC and Greater Vancouver community. GSSB’s mandate is to extend our understanding of the multidimensional aspects of global citizenship while acknowledging the scope of international experience and knowledge within the UBC campus community.
What we do:
We meet approximately once per month throughout the year in a series of knowledge-exchange sessions which involve public speaking, intercultural dialogue, and community building. These sessions last approximately 2.5 hours and are a chance for students to improve public speaking skills, share insights from their international experiences, and connect with other students and student mentors. Presentation skills are developed through impromptu and other public speaking exercises. GSSB members also have the opportunity to present polished, ten-minute speeches to on- and off-campus audiences such as schools and various organizations throughout Vancouver.
Who can join:
UBC undergraduate and graduate students who have lived, studied, worked, and/or volunteered outside of Canada and are committed to intercultural dialogue and community building.
How GSSB works:
We will hold our first meeting on Saturday, October 18 th, 2008, from 2:00-4:30 pm, in the Neville Scarfe Education Building, Room 209.
Subsequently we offer five knowledge-exchange sessions that take place Saturday afternoons from 2:00-4:30 pm in the Neville Scarfe Education Building, Room 310:
First term: November 8th, 2008; November 22nd, 2008
Second term: January 17th, 2009; February 7th, 2009; March 7th, 2009
