LFS 302A: International Field Studies in Sustainable Agriculture Cuba
Summer 2013: April 30 – May 22, 2013 (3 credits)
This 22 day field studies course introduces students to Cuba’s leading thinkers in sustainable agriculture and provides them a unique opportunity to witness first hand Cuba’s transformation from Green Revolution mono-cropping to sustainable, organic farming methods based on biological pesticides and fertilizers in only one decade. As part of Cuba’s economic reforms, the Cuban government is taking major steps to create a people-centred economy based on strong participation by new worker cooperatives. Students will also be introduced to the latest thinking in this area.
This course is relevant for students from many disciplines, in particular those studying agriculture and food, nutrition, public policy, Latin America, conservation, resources, cooperative economics, sustainability and international relations.
